Adrienne Rich, or When it's cold all I want are Adrienne Rich and Theodore Roethke poems. I don't know why.
from Twenty-One Love Poems
I
Wherever in this city, screens flicker
with pornography, with science-fiction vampires,
victimized hirelings bending to the lash,
we also have to walk . . . if simply as we walk
through the rainsoaked garbage, the tabloid cruelties
of our own neighborhoods.
We need to grasp our lives inseperable
from those rancid dreams, that blurt of metal, those disgraces,
and the red begonia perilously flashing
from a tenement sill six stories high,
or the long-legged young girls playing ball
in the junior highschool playground.
No one has imagined us. We want to live like trees,
sycamores blazing through the sulfuric air,
dappled with scars, still exuberantly budding,
our animal passion rooted in the city.

Somebody needs to stop me

First it was the NY Times Bento slideshow.
Which then led to the insane Luxirare Bento.
Dialed it down a notch with Happy Little Bento.
I read the Times article a month or two ago but cruised the other sights way too late last night.
Today, sans cute bento boxes and proper accoutrement, armed only with what I had on hand, I made my first Bento for mine and Atti's lunch.
Sorry, my little digital Canon is taking such fuzzy pics.
Atti's is avo, scallion and sweet potato sushi, carrots, steamed asparagus and Isreali cous cous made with roasted butternut, shallots, raisins, fennel and sage. He liked it.
Mine is rye bread, albacore, sweet potato and my sweet pickles "rolls", cous cous, asparagus, sweet potato and scallion sushi and some carrots for garnish.
Nobody needs to give me crap about what real "sushi" or a "roll" is either.
These were fun, I think I am going to make more!

Really??
Ok, I just checked my handy sitemeter which I largely ignore. It claims that some of you spend a half hour or more perusing my eensy blog. While I am aware that it may be that you open it, go do your laundry, come back, move on...maybe some of you aren't. I would LOVE it if you left a comment and maybe even told me who you were. Maybe we'll be blog friends. Maybe we'll recommend good books to each other. Maybe our children will marry...oops, too much? Anyway, leave a comment. I'd love to hear from you.

Things I like

Honestly, it's been a bit of a poopy summer so far. Serious sadness with Ash, litigation with the farmer's market and crazy head with me. It's a good time to take stock of the things that are going well, of which this is only a small sampling: great friends, no, the world's best friends; my boys really love each other; Atti has mad style AND loves to read; early morning sunshine and great animals and lastly, a great typewriter and a porch on which to write. And Jason, always Jason.

I am a git.
Ted Kooser is in Casper, Wyoming leading a workshop as we speak. I blanked on the date and failed to plan for it. I think I am going to hop in the car tomorrow morning and try to catch day two. Ted Kooser! I adore him. I particularly love the book of poems he did with Jim Harrison,Braided Creek .
I wrote a poem yesterday and jotted some ideas for a short story. I may be making too much of that- very brief notes. Eh. It could be something.

the young Truman Capote

Our friend Charlotte found the bowtie for a quarter when we were thrifting with RJ the other day. Atticus is in love with his new clip on bowtie. He asks for it every morning and wants to be taken immediately to the big mirror to see himself. He leaves it on all day. Yesterday he helped his dad garden all day long.
